Quarante-Quatre

Fire breather, ParisQuaranteQuatre

Fire, as a discipline.

17 years of inventing tricks and learning to control every flame. I teach it, and I put it to work for the camera.

A big flame is easy. A controlled one takes years.

Holding a sustain or making something huge isn’t enough. I train for control of every move: the length of the flame, how long it lasts, where it sits in space, the number of sprays, how fine the atomisation is. When the flame does what I decided, it’s because I meant it. Solo or with a crew, that control is what makes a great image and a safe show.

Creations

Photo series, fashion, ads, music videos, films. On set I work as a “pyrographiste” (a French coinage: an artist who paints with flame): I design the fire with the photographer or director, from colours, sparks and powders to where every flame sits in the frame. Often I’m not even in the picture.
